NALF Notes
Late Fall 2007

NALF Is at Home on the Web
By Brad Parker, director of communications, North American Limousin Foundation

North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) members and their customers in the commercial cow-calf sector can find a wealth of helpful information on the World Wide Web.

For starters, you can retrieve NALF herdbook information via the EPD (expected progeny difference) and pedigree lookup tool on the association’s Web site (www.nalf.org). An animal’s pedigree page also includes information about its color, polled status, NALF and actual Limousin percentages, Angus and Red Angus ancestry, EPDs, Mainstream Terminal Index ($MTI) value and individual performance data.

In fall 2007, NALF added the adjusted performance data and ratios (including ultrasound-scan information), complete DNA-test results for color and polled status, actual percentage Angus and Red Angus blood when applicable, and NALF EPDs for the Angus and Red Angus animals in its herdbook.

Limousin breeders need to remember the deadline to submit data for the next international genetic evaluation is Nov. 15. Without your submissions, the new “Performance” section of an animal’s pedigree page will display many blanks and “N/As,” which detract from your marketing efforts.

The Nov. 15 deadline also is important for producers of Lim‑Flex® progeny from Angus or Red Angus parents that are not in the NALF herdbook yet. Without the data, their EPDs will not be available for winter show programs or spring marketing materials.

New EPDs will be available around Jan. 1, 2008. NALF will post the spring sire summary on the Web site in mid-January.

NALF also is using the Web to reach out to its members and commercial cattle producers. A series of informational webcasts on DVAuction.com has been addressing cattle genetics, management and marketing. This year’s remaining dates and topics follow. All of the webcasts begin at 7 p.m. MT.

  • Nov. 20 – Basic Marketing (members only; sponsored by R&R Marketing Co.)
  • Nov. 27 – Advanced Marketing (members only; sponsored by KK Seedstock Consultants)
  • Dec. 11 – Crossbreeding Strategies
  • Dec. 18 – Bull-Buying Strategies (sponsored by Five Star Cattle Systems)

To participate, you first must register at DVAuction.com on the Web. More information is available via the “Producer-Outreach Webcasts” link on the NALF home page. An archive of the visuals, audio and supplemental materials from past webcasts also is on the Web site.

If you need help locating breed information on the Web, send an e‑mail message to limousin@nalf.org or call the NALF office at (303) 220-1693.
