NALF Genetic Defects Policies

The following policies will go into effect as soon as NALF implements its new computer system, which is expected in early 2010.

  1. For progeny of an Angus, Red Angus, Lim‑Flex® or percentage-Limousin (NXM registration prefix) artificial-insemination (AI) sire to be eligible for registration, either (a) an actual arthrogryposis multiplex (AM), neuropathic hydrocephalus (NH) or osteopetrosis (OS) genotype for the sire must be on file at the NALF office from an accredited laboratory or a breed association or (b) the AI sire must be designated as free of the defect by pedigree and be parent-verified to both his sire and dam.

  2. For embryo-transfer (ET) progeny of an Angus, Red Angus, Lim‑Flex or percentage-Limousin (NXF registration prefix) donor dam to be eligible for registration, either (a) an actual AM, NH or OS genotype must be on file for the donor at the NALF office from an accredited laboratory or a breed association; (b) the donor dam must be designated as free of the defect by pedigree and be parent-verified to both her sire and dam; or (c) the ET progeny must be tested for the defect.

  3. There are no testing requirements for natural-service Angus, Red Angus, Lim‑Flex and percentage-Limousin sires and dams; however, an untested sire or dam with a carrier in his or her pedigree (and for which a free-by-pedigree designation cannot be assigned) will be flagged as a “warning” or “watch” animal, as will all of his or her progeny, until an actual or inferred genotype can be assigned.
