Registering Limousin Cattle

Who May Register

Any founder, annual, junior or associate account is entitled to register Limousin animals through NALF. Only the first owner of an animal can record that animal. The first owner is defined as the membership that owned the cow at the time she calved the animal to be recorded.

What May Be Registered

  • Any bull with a minimum of 25 percent Limousin blood.
  • Any female with a minimum of 25 percent blood, e.g. a foundation female bred to a registered three-quarter-blood Limousin bull can be registered.

In registering halfbloods, NALF policy enables you to breed up from either side of the pedigree, breeding registered Limousin bulls to females for other breeds, or by breeding registered purebred bulls of other beef breeds to registered purebred (93 percent minimum) Limousin females.

The percent of Limousin blood in percentage animals is printed on that animal's registration certificate.

As keeper of the Limousin herd book, the primary function of the North American Limousin Foundation is the registration of Limousin cattle. Cattle may be registered with NALF following a simple procedure, which is outlined in detail in the ÒRegistrationÓ section of the Member's Manual. Briefly, the registration procedure works as follows:

1. Assignment of a Herd Prefix - All members of NALF, other than affiliate members (X members) are assigned a four-letter herd prefix upon acceptance of their application for membership. This prefix is then used by that membership, and may not ever be assigned to another NALF member. It is an official requirement for registering animals with NALF that all animals must be tattooed with an individual animal tattoo, year code and herd prefix.

2. Application for Entry Form - Animals may be registered with NALF by filling out an Application for Entry Form available from the NALF office. A membership must be set up and a herd prefix assigned before application for entry forms can be submitted to NALF. Click here for registration forms.

3. Registration Fee Structure - The fee for registering animals through NALF is determined by the age of the animal at the time NALF receives written notification to register that animal. The current fee structure is :

Calf Age Fee
0-120 $15.00
121-270 $20.00
271-365 $25.00

Payment to NALF should be made at the time the animal is submitted for registration. Upon receipt of the correct registration fee and the complete, error-free application form, the animal will be officially processed and a registration certificate sent to the applicant.

Note: Fees are double for associate members.

Information Needed to Register

1. Exact birthdate.
2. NALF registration number for sire.
3. NALF registration number for dam, unless the dam is a foundation cow and is not registered.
4. Application for registration must be made by the membership that owns the cow when the calf to be registered is born.
5. Performance weights are optional and processed at no charge.

Fullblood and Purebred

Currently the only classifications NALF has are:
1. Percentage - bulls less than 93% and females less that 87%. The exact percentage is printed on the certificate.
2. Purebred (87%) - this is the qualified purebred status for females only. The percentage appears on the certificate if the female is 87% or greater but less than 93%.
3. Purebred - appears on all animals that are 93% or greater Limousin. In calculating the percentage of Limousin of the offspring, all cattle in this category are considered to be 100% Limousin. The percentage does not appear on the papers.
4. Fullblood- As of May 1, 1993, Fullblood appears on all cattle that trace back to full French ancestry and have not been upgraded from domestic stock.

The breed codes on pedigrees indicate the ancestry of the animal. As an example, a purebred bull with the breed codes LLLLLLL* indicates the bull does trace back to a domestic foundation animal. An animal with fullblood ancestry always carries a breed code of LLLLLLLL.
